Winter Birthday Cards
December is a month I look forward to for many reasons. I love when it gets colder and I can wear sweaters more often, and I love the Christmas season, but mostly it is because I enjoy celebrating some special birthdays. My mom’s (Debbie) birthday is December 20th, and if that wasn’t special enough, my niece (Kamilla) who 5 years ago was scheduled for December 19th, was postponed to the 20th as well. We are excited to see them both this weekend and of course, I have made their birthday cards.
happy birthday mom
I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I was surprised to see a picture of my mom, who does not have a Facebook account. I always loved spending my mom’s birthday with her, but that is more difficult now that I don’t live in Houston anymore. Fortunately, we will see them this weekend. She is the most kind, loving and giving person I know. I am constantly learning from her wisdom. I truly miss not being able to see her more often.
For my amazing mom’s card, I often create use floral designs since we both love them. This year I decided to pull out the stamps I illustrated for Winnie & Walter to create this watercolor floral birthday card. I started with a bristol card cut 4×5.25 and stamped various floral images from In Bloom: Anna’s Flora and In Bloom: Addie’s Garden (named after my grandmother) and embossed in white. I love the look of watercolor, but I still struggle with getting the look I want. I added some pale blues and greens to the background before painting the flowers. I used various distress markers and aqua markers to get the colors you see here. I also added some red gold from my Gansai Tambi starry colors set on the buds at the top of the arrangement, and then flicked the gold paint over the whole card – because who doesn’t love gold flecks, right?
Here is a closer view of the card, and I chose some of my favorites from the two sets. I’m actually very partial to the mum and the fern frond at the bottom. I used the Happy Birthday sentiment from The Party stamp set and added an array of sequins from opal / pink, rose gold, gold and clear. The panel was adhered to a side folding landscape Neenah Solar White card base. I know I need to keep practicing my watercolor skills, but I hope she likes it!
kamilla’s birthday card
First of all – really?? Five already? Where does the time go? She is growing so fast, and has made huge strides this year. And, what a happy child! Davis and I love her to pieces, but I have to say, she is a HUGE fan of Walter’s. Trust me, she adores him and he’s actually really good with her too. By the way, it RARELY snows in San Antonio or Houston. This was a big deal! I wish I could have been there when it happened to see her enjoying this new experience. They received .7″ and we had 1.9″ recorded at the airport – so that is pretty significant in these parts. So, to celebrate this event and her birthday, I have created this card.
This card was so fun to make, and it is using several stamps from my stash. There would be a “Walter” next to her, but alas there is none – plus, he wasn’t thrilled with the snow, and he wasn’t there with her. (sounds like I need to design a Walter stamp….right??) However, their cat Squeaky was there, so I decided to add her to the card. Two of the stamps that are still available are the Cute Cat / Striped Tail from Viva Las Vegas Stamps, and most of the snowflakes you see in the background which are a peg stamp set from Rubber Stamp Tapestry called Winter Night Sky. The large silver snowflakes are a block with four designs called Delicate Snowflakes by Judikins, and the Winter Girl, “snow” from Let it Snow x3 and the I love you more than are all from A Muse Stamps, but I could not find them in their catalog any longer.
The card came together very quickly. I created my own blizzard from a variety of ink colors in blues, purples and silver directly stamped onto Stampin’ Up whisper white cardstock. I punched a silver paper scallop circle and smaller circle with my marvy punches. The characters were stamped on watercolor paper and colored with Stampin’ Up markers and then fussy cut and adhered to the white circle. The banner strip is a left over from my cards on my recent card party post, just flipped over and added the two stamps. I used a blue marker to color just one “snow” and stamped it at the end. Both the circle and banner are added with foam tape. Then I got to work with the Frosted Lace Stickles – snow on the ground, on the cat and on Kamilla.
Happy birthday to our December girls! Wishing you both the best year ever!!!
